Here is Gang Gang Dance performing a live studio set of tracks from their recent release, Eye Contact, which is my favorite release of 2011 so far (a review will be posted shortly). I love the way Gang Gang Dance incorporate dancey House rhythms, left-field experimentation, and multi-cultural musical traditions to create a totally unique yet accessible sound. I hope you all enjoy this set as much as I do!

Here is one of my all-time favorite covers – The Butthole Surfers adding their touch of insanity to American Woman. The Surfers are one of the greatest bands to come out of the ’80’s, and in my opinion have been very influential on current musical trends. Here’s to hoping more people give this great band some renewed attention.

DFA White Out Sessions – How Deep Is Your Love? by The Rapture from DFA Records on Vimeo.

The Rapture are back on DFA, and this is the first single from their forthcoming LP In the Grace of Your Love due in the US on September 6. These guys were rad in the early ‘aughts, but kind of fell off the map for a bit. Their excellent debut album Echoes was also released on DFA, so hopefully a return to the label that produced their breakout LP will help them get the magic back.

In light of PMK’s excellent birthday song choice, I will also pick a birthday song!  Enjoy.

My official birthday song is King of Spain by Swedish indie-folk star The Tallest Man On Earth. Officially.

Enjoy…and check out more of his tunes here.

PMK’s recent posting of Weezer covering Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” got me thinking about covers, one of my favorite manifestations of music.  Ranging from the extremely creative and excellent to the “Dear God, make it stop” variety, covers always offer up something interesting, much like a car accident.  Well, only if it’s bad.  Never mind.

A personal favorite is Richard Thompson’s variation on “Season of the Witch,” originally by Donovan.

So this happened…and it’s pretty awesome.
